PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND ACOUSTICS

Unit I: Elasticity

Hooke’s law – stress - strain diagram – elastic moduli – relation between elastic constants – Poisson’s ratio – expression for Poisson’s ratio in terms of elastic constants – work done in stretching a wire and twisting couple on a cylinder – rigidity modulus by static torstion – torstional pendulum – rigidity modulus and moment of inertia – cantilever – expression for bending moment – expression for depression – non uniform and uniform bending – theory.


Unit II: Surface tension and Viscosity

Surface tension - Excess of pressure over curved surfaces – application to spherical and cylindrical drops and bubbles – variation of surface with temperature – Jaegar’s method - Viscosity- rate of flow of liquid in a capillary tube – Poiseuille’s formula – experiment to determine Coefficient of viscosity of liquid – variation of viscosity with temperature.


Unit III : Diffusion and Osmosis

Diffusion – Fick’s Law Graham’s Law of diffusion of Gases – effusion- transpiration and transfusion- Osmosis and Osmotic pressure – Laws of osmosis – Osmosis and vapour pressure of a solution – Osmosis and boiling point of solution – Osmosis and freezing point – Osmotic plant.


Unit IV: Oscillation and Waves

SHM – damped and forced oscillation, resonance – wave function for progressive wave – derive expression for wave motion – velocity of longitudinal wave in a gas and transverse wave in string.


Unit V: Ultrasonics and Acoustics

Production of ultrasonic waves – Piezocrystal method – Magnetostriction method – Properties – Applications-Acoustics of buildings- Reverberation and time of reverberation – absorption coefficient – Sabine’s formula – Measurement of reverberation time – acoustic aspects of halls and auditorium.
